Dangerous Goods Storage and Transport Policy
v2.0
Purpose. This policy sets the rules for receiving, storing, handling and transporting packaged dangerous goods so that the business complies with the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and Victorian dangerous goods regulations.
1.Scope
Corridor accepts packaged dangerous goods of classes 3 (flammable liquids), 8 (corrosives) and 9 (miscellaneous) for storage and road transport. The business does not accept explosives, radioactive material, infectious substances or bulk dangerous goods. Any request to handle other classes must be referred to the Safety, Compliance and Training Manager before acceptance.
2.Acceptance and documentation
A consignor must provide a compliant transport document and a safety data sheet before dangerous goods are received. Receiving staff must check the UN number, proper shipping name, class, packing group and quantity against the documentation and the package markings before signing for the goods. Goods that do not match will be quarantined and the consignor contacted.
3.Storage
Dangerous goods must be stored in the designated bunded store in bays allocated by class and segregated in line with the segregation table in the dangerous goods register. Quantities must not exceed the limits recorded in the register. The store will be inspected weekly and the inspection recorded.
- Class 3 in the flammable liquids cabinet or bunded bay only
- Class 8 segregated from class 3 by the distances in the register
- Spill kits and fire extinguishers checked weekly
- No ignition sources within the bunded area
4.Transport
Vehicles carrying dangerous goods above placard load must display the correct placards and carry the transport document and emergency information in the approved holder. Drivers must hold a dangerous goods driver licence when the load requires it and must follow the route and parking rules in the transport procedure.
5.Emergency response
Every spill, leak or fire involving dangerous goods must be treated as an emergency under the emergency response plan and reported in the incident register. Workers must not attempt to clean up a spill beyond the capacity of the spill kit or without the personal protective equipment listed in the safety data sheet.
6.Training
Workers who receive, store or load dangerous goods must complete dangerous goods awareness training at induction and refresher training every two years. The training matrix will record completion.
